They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? (1969)

IMDB rating: 7.80

Plot: Gloria (Jane Fonda) is a young woman of the Depression. She has aged beyond her years and feels her life is hopeless, having been cheated and betrayed many times in her past. Fantasizing about movies, she sees herself as an actress and decides to head for Hollywood, having got the idea from a movie magazine while recuperating in the hospital from a suicide attempt which resulted from another unhappy love affair. Robert (Michael Sarrazin), a desperate Hollywood citizen unsuccessfully trying to become a director, never doubting that he’ll eventually make it. Robert and Gloria meet and decide to enter a dance marathon, one of the crazes of the thirties. The grueling dancing takes its toll on Gloria’s already weakened spirit, and she tells Robert that she’d be better off dead, that her life is hopeless – all the while acting cruel and bitter, alienating those around her, trying to convince him to shoot her and put her out of her misery. After all, they shoot horses, don’t they?

Who can add to this list of "ridiculous" laws? Which law is the funniest?
ILLINOIS – females must call their male counterparts "master" while on a date. (This does not apply to married couples.)
-According to state law, it is illegal to speak English. The officially recognized language is "American".
-A man with a mustache may not kiss a woman.
- It is against the law to use a slingshot unless your are a law enforcement officer.

-Chicago: Law forbids eating in a place that is on fire; It is illegal to give a dog whiskey; Kites may not be flown within the city limits; Spitting against the wind is forbidden
-One may not pee in his neighbor’s mouth
-There is a $1,000 dollar fine for beating rats with baseball bats.
-In Chicago it is also illegal to take a French poodle to the opera, and for women over 200 pounds to ride horses in shorts.

You may be convicted of a Class 4 felony offense, punishable by up to three years in state prison, for the crime of "eavesdropping" on your own conversation

-Dwarf-tossing," the strange practice of hurling dwarfs in padded suits, is outlawed in the bars of Springfield, Ill., because it’s dangerous and exploitative. The practice is apparently allowed elsewhere in town, with a special permit.

CHINA – You must be intelligent to go to college.

IOWA – Men cannot wink at females they are unacquainted with.

NEW YORK – $25 fine for flirting -prohibits men from turning around on any city street and looking "at a woman in that way". 2nd conviction for a crime of this magnitude calls for the violating male to wear horse-blinders. Men cannot be seen in public wearing pants/jacket that don’t match. You may only water your lawn if hose is held in hand.

CALIFORNIA – Sunshine is guaranteed to the masses. It’s a misdemeanor to shoot at any game from a moving vehicle, unless that target is a whale.
-No vehicle without a driver may exceed 60 mph.
-Nobody is allowed to ride a bike in a pool.

OREGON – One may not test their physical endurance while driving a car on a highway. Illegal to place a container filled with human fecal matter on the side of any highway. It is illegal to whisper "dirty" things in your lover’s ear during sex. Ice-cream may not be eaten on Sunday’s. Ministers are forbidden to eat onion or garlic before delivering a sermon.

OKLAHOMA: You must first have permission before taking a bite out of someone’s hamburger. Whale fishing is illegal. People who make ugly faces at dogs may be fined. Molesting an automobile is illegal. Cars must be tethered/leashed outside of public buildings.

PENNSYLVANIA – Placing an alligator over 3 ft in a kitchen to frighten a family member is illegal.
In Ohio, it’s illegal to hold a piece of cheese in hand while talking to the opposite sex.

Virtually none of these laws actually exist. You do realize this, right?

The Internet is a great thing. One of its downsides, though, is that any knuckle-dragger can write their own site, and post it as "true", and someone will fall for it.

Chicago: You may be convicted of a Class 4 felony offense, punishable by up to three years in state prison, for the crime of "eavesdropping" on your own conversation

While I can’t comment on the exact penalties this one is basically true, but it’s not as crazy as it sounds.

Illinois is one of the states that requires everyone involved a conversation to know that it is being recorded. Since several other states have the same rule it’s nothing special about Chicago. While I personally feel it’s wrong it’s not loony.

California: Whaling is normally done from boats that are moving. Boats are vehicles. Thus an exemption for whales makes sense.
Loren Pechtel | Jan 24, 2010

If you’d like to see some real laws, Google Massachusetts blue laws. These are actual laws that are still on the books. Many are from Pilgrim days.

Examples:

All adult males must carry their fowling pieces (muskets/shotguns) while traveling to and from church on the Sabbath. (holdover from Puritan times when the risk of Indian attack was real.)

It is legal to graze your cattle on Boston Common. (Similar to Central Park in NYC.)

It also is still legal to hang pirates, and imprison criminals in "Stocks" on Boston Common. (Stocks are the wooden devices where your head and hands are placed in slots in the bottom section and the hinged top section is lowered to hold you in a bent over position.)

Is the holy Bible the greatest book ever written?
The Holy Bible tells the story of, well, everything. It begins with the creation of All That Is, and ends with Judgment Day (though it’s pretty different from the one they showed in "Terminator 2"). It’s split into two parts, one old and one new. This makes it easier to get through, sort of like "Lord of the Rings" or "Harry Potter" books. There’s all sorts of numbers to help you keep track of where you are, so you don’t have to worry about a bookmark.

What are some of the non-obvious factors that contribute to highway accidents?
(besides speeding / human error and traffic volume)
What I had in mind is what would make one stretch of a road is a given area more prone to highway traffic accidents than a different stretch of that same route, let’s say, 10 miles away. As one of the answers suggested, slope and curvature may play a role, and as well as proximity to on/off ramps. Any other thoughts?

Well, there are things like a bee is buzzing around you inside the car, and it causes you to have an accident.
Talking on the cell phone, and getting distracted.
monkeybone | Feb 02, 2010

not paying attention to your driving…….always expect the unexpected
blcad82 | Feb 02, 2010

One of the top factors is distracted driving, and that’s primarily from cell phones now. You might call that human error but I had to get that in. One Non-obvious driving distraction can be the number of people in your vehicle talking to you while you are driving.

However other factors, could be any of the following:
Your vehicle’s condition [is it in working condition, also are items such as windshield washer fluid filled?]

Weather conditions, which will include not enough or too much light, rain etc.

Road conditions, and type of road such as hilly or winding roads.
Old Mustang | Feb 02, 2010

Distraction and the weather.
t-bone | Feb 02, 2010

Line of sight obstructions – (trees, bushes, parked cars, etc.)

Poorly placed, or missing traffic signs.

Poorly designed on/off ramps – (like when your on ramp comes from the right, then you only have 1/2 a mile to get across 4 lanes of traffic for your off ramp to the left.)

Poorly maintained road surfaces. (pot holes, etc.)

And my favorite, Stupid Local Bureaucratic Laws, – (big truck restriction for then left lanes – trucks usually are passing through, and cars that have to cross the "truck lanes" on the right to get to the "fast" lanes, then go back across the "truck lanes" to get to their exit ramp just a few miles along. – If the big trucks that are just passing through, could use the left lanes, then the cars wouldn’t have to weave in and out through the truck traffic.) – [Example: drive around the I-285 loop in Atlanta a few times]

I did baby sit, but only for my next door neighbors, because i knew them well, at the age of 13, i would also take there kids out, but to baby sit, maybe wait a few more years.

Its not an easy job.

1.) WOULD YOU LET A 13YR OLD BABYSIT YOUR CHILDREN?
Not alone, no. I would let you come over to entertain my kids while I was busy doing housework, or perhaps sit with them while I nipped out to the shops tho.

2.) WHAT WOULD YOU EXPECT FROM THEM?
I’d expect you to be patient and understanding towards them, to know what a childs basic need are, (like, to know what to do if a child is crying and how to give them what they need)

3.) HOW MUCH WOULD YOU PAY THEM (IN UK POUNDS IF POSSIBLE PLEASE)
?3 or ?4 an hour

4.) WOULD YOUR BABYSITTER HAVE TO HAVE A CPR/ BABYSITTING COURSE. OR WOULD IT BE AN EXTRA
It would be handy if you knew basic first aid, and how to remain calm in an emergency..

5.) AND ANYMORE TIPS
13 is a little young to be left alone with children for an extended period of time. You could try asking to take younger kids out to your local park or sit in with them while their mum gets on with some much needed housework to gain experience. Once you turn about 16/17 I would consider you to be old enough to watch them over night or for a few hours alone. But I would also take in to account how mature and responsible you are, and how patient with difficult children you are. (I have a son with ADHD who likes try and push peoples buttons lol)

why is it so hard to get over an injustice committed by a family member?
My husband worked for his parents family business after college. He got paid almost nothing and worked 80-100 a week. They made millions. He stayed with the promise that all of his hours of overtime were going to stock. After 15 yrs, when his parents were in their 70’s and didn’t even show up anymore, and we got married and had a baby, I asked about said stock. (we eloped because no one supported our marriage) They provided phony stock certificates for 50%. I took them to a lawyer, found out, and all hell broke loose. We ended up buying the co. for more than it was worth, (mostly to save husband’s reputation bc everyone associated name with him), paid endless accounting and legal bills, and were insulted like crazy. To make last payment last year on jan 1 we had to sell our house and borrow like crazy. I continued to let them see their grandkid, I drove her to their house, and she and I went to family weddings, functions etc. They kept demanding more money. Their accountant cooked the books in the final year that they owned 50% and our accountant told us just to pay it becuase it would cost more to fight it – so he got his 50% of money and we got very little and still owed taxes on our %50 according to his accounting. He then began saying we hadn’t made payments and we would have to find cashed checks to prove that we had. Finally, one afternoon drove grandchild to their house for a visit. Saw f-i-l, he wouldn’t even look at me to say hello. I was furious. Then after I got home, I got a text message that F-I-L’s b-day was that day, just letting me know so I wouldn’t be uncomfortable picking her up. My husband and I weren’t invited. I went to the house before it started, grabbed child, and left. M-I-L started sending myhusband nasty emails about me (that woman) and we decided to never speak to them again. IT STILL HURTS! When I heard about their housewarming party at their new $1,000,000 house I was furious. When I ran into their painters and they said M-I-L misses my child so much, I WAS FURIOUS! When people tell us that we should make amends I get furious. They are rotten human beings. Have treated people like crap forever, and I always knew they were bad news. Is this my punishment for standing by when they treated their other’s like this?

When these family problems occur, it is harder to get over it than with a total stranger !! You and your husband did the right thing by "not speaking to them ever again". Greed is a very bad thing to begin with and don’t worry by what people say or not say about you and your husband. Think of it: you and your husband, sleep peacefully at night !

Clo ! | Jan 04, 2009

It sounds as tho these people are users and your husband has allowed it to happen. I blame him as much as I do them. You have an up hill battle and I wish you luck. Its time that he pulls himself away from the family and move on with his own life and his own children. You have no control. Its up to your husband in how he is going to let his family treat him and his children. Wishing you luck for the new year.
