Was Obama right or wrong, when he said this country is a secular one, not a christian one?
Threaty of tripoli
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.

The study of theology, as it stands in Christian churches, is the study of nothing; it is founded on nothing; it rests on nothing; it proceeds by no authorities; it has no data; it can demonstrate nothing and admits of no conclusion.

My earlier views of the unsoundness of the Christian scheme of salvation and the human origin of the scriptures, have become clearer and stronger with advancing years and I see no reason for thinking I shall ever change them.
– Abraham Lincoln
In religion, Mr. Lincoln was about of the same opinion as Bob Ingersoll, and there is no account of his ever having changed. He went to church a few times with his family while he was President, but so far as I have been able to find out, he remained an unbeliever. Mr. Lincoln in his younger days wrote a book, in which he endeavored to prove the fallacy of the plan of salvation and the divinity of Christ."

short time elapsed after the death of the great reformer of the Jewish religion, before his principles were departed from by those who professed to be his special servants, and perverted into an engine for enslaving mankind, and aggrandising their oppressors in Church and State; that the purest system of morals ever before preached to man, has been adulterated and sophisticated by artificial constructions, into a mere contrivance to filch wealth and power to themselves; that rational men not being able to swallow their impious heresies, in order to force them down their throats, they raise the hue and cry of infidelity, while themselves are the greatest obstacles to the advancement of the real doctrines of Jesus, and do in fact constitute the real Anti-Christ.

I cannot believe in the immortality of the soul…. No, all this talk of an existence for us, as individuals, beyond the grave is wrong. It is born of our tenacity of life — our desire to go on living — our dread of coming to an end.

Yes, to answer your question, it is Secular so he is RIGHT. In this country named United states of America, their founders actually separated Church/Religion from state affairs and Government by looking at the consequences in the countries they immigrated from., which was the first and only country to do this at the time, and that was the first thing they did.
They also said in their constitution/ and bill of rights, the people’s right to practice whatever they wished.
Now there is an argument that the laws were found on Judeo-Christian principles but that happens in almost every country where the countries constitution for example takes laws from religion such as Canada as well with its constitution or Australia etc…….. In countries with Islamic influences, they took laws from the Qu’ran where the laws essentially boil down to the same.
Now there are human positive laws that man makes aside from what the religious texts say when he feels the relgiious text isnt right, or doesnt reflect the societies present belief, such as when Canada allowed Gay marriage…..human positive law, made by man when he saw fit and it over rides the bible.
Now one may argue that USA was found by Christians but that didnt make it a christian country, it was a christian population which used its beliefs to form the basic laws but that demographic was subject to change in the future as its happening so forth, because its ever evolving, this nation thats called America.

To answer your initial question, I can understand how it could be taken two different ways. America is secular in that we are allowed to believe whatever we like, including nothing at all. But it’s Christian in that Christianity is the majority, thus making is a "Christian country".
It’s all in how you interpret his words. It doesn’t bother me one way nor the other honestly. I listen to Hannity and this guy really gets livid that Obama said that. Then again, I listen to my fellow atheists, and some of them are livid that someone would call this a Christian nation.

Christians say that the U.S. is a Christian nation, and since they’re a majority, or at least the most openly "f*ck you" about it, you might hear that we were founded by Christians a lot. Really, most of the important occurrences of Christianity in the developing days of our nation involves witch hunts, and we all know how much fun those were.

Yes he was right!
This country should a secular one, not a christian one.
That means: The Constitution should rule and not the bible or the koran.

The government is secular. The country is a mix of many religions, with Christianity dominating. There was a popular movement in the Republican party recently to change the government into a religious one, but thankfully that movement seems to be dying out.

I am an atheist and I acknowledge that our country is founded on Christian principles and that a majority of her citizens are Christians. Unlike most of the other posters (and you, more than likely), I also understand what "freedom of religion" means and know where "separation of church and state" is in the Constitution (nowhere).

Hmm. Great quotes. I agree completely that we ARE and SHOULD CONSIDER OURSELVES a secular nation.
But good luck getting over-privileged rich "Christians" (more in name than in practice) to admit it.
I’ve done more volunteer work and advocacy for the poor and oppressed than any of the fools who go sit in the same pew at my childhood Catholic Church every Sunday and call themselves believers. :/

LOL @ Amnt. Can’t forget those Salem Witch Trials. Seriously. This is what religion "evolves" its people into: torturers and murderers.

HE WAS RIGHT!!!!
LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE…
WE ARE ONLY PARTIAL RELIGOUS.. THIS IS NOT A CHURCH REUNION HERE~!!!!!! THIS IS POLITICS AND HALF OF THE PEOPLE LIVING IN AMERICA SIN EVERYDAY AND CALL THEMSELVES RELIGIOUS…WE NEED TO FOCUS ON MAKING THIS COUNTRY BETTER NOT HALF CHRISTIAN…..AND PLUS RELIGION SHOULD HAVE NO BUSINESS IN POLITICS THAT IS A SEPARATE CHOICE OF LIFE AND SHOULD BE KEPT QUITE AND WITHIN EACH OTHERS HOUSEHOLDS
lacint17 | Jan 29, 2010
a secular one, christianity does not realize the harm they would do to true believers if they tried to turn ourselves into a christian nation, if people would really think about it with an open mind, and realize just how evil human beings are, and how many of our politicians have claimed religion and been exposed , i think they would realize it is a double edged sword
btw, i’m hopelessly agnostic
but with open ears and an open mind
spot the cat | Jan 29, 2010
You are mostly correct sir. But the point that most of the founders made was simply that they did not the new nation to come under the grip of any religion like happened in England.

This country is home to a bunch of individuals, the religious beliefs of any person or people doesn’t define our country. We don’t hold religion as the cornerstone of America, you can belief whatever you want, who cares. Go to whatever church you feel you need to attend to feel better about yourself going to. Religion is a very small part of what makes America the country it is. They want to believe it is the say all of what it is to be an American, it’s not. People stripped of any superiority in belonging to a group, do not run America, they block the true Americans from speaking, they shout out and over the people who really make America the greatest country in the world. They just need to be put in their place and stop trying to annoy everyone eles. God didn’t tell anyone they had to be any certain Religion, nor did he say build a church and give me money, or you shall be damned, and unAmerican. Get Real.

Agreed that this is not a "Christian Nation" in that it is not run by a religious entity.
I am not sure whether he said the US was not a Christian country, or not. I looked at FactCheck.org and found that his prepared remarks of June 28, 2006 read as follows:
"Given the increasing diversity of America’s population, the dangers of sectarianism have never been greater. Whatever we once were, we are no longer just a Christian nation; we are also a Jewish nation, a Muslim nation, a Buddhist nation, a Hindu nation, and a nation of nonbelievers."
But what he actually said was:
"Whatever we once were, we are no longer a Christian nation
