Ex GF moved out of a house I stayed at and took all my stuff, what can I do?
Her and I and another female rented this house in California but my GF and I broke up and she stayed somewhere until i moved out. So i shipped stuff back to the Midwest where I am from and was going to come back to Cali to get my furniture and other things well this roommate, whether she is lying or not, told me my ex moved out 2 days ago and took all my stuff with her. Now I called the police and wanted to file charges, guess its hard since I am out of State, but they toy me around saying to contact States Attorney, but they tell me contact a Civil Attorney. How can she get away screwing another guy over after several years and run away with his stuff? How can the police not file charges against her or contact her about the matter? I don’t get California. Where I am from they will follow through investigations. I know, I should have gotten a Uhaul from the getgo, but couldn’t afford it. I wanted to wait until I get my tax returns. I have no contact with her, I don’t know her number, she changed it, rebounding with a new guy I gather.
I’ve called the police, they’re no help, they told me to contact a States Attorney they won’t do anything unless the police charged her with something which the dispatcher told me the police don’t like getting involved in stuff like that? lol, seriously? Then States attorney directed me to a civil attorney. All I want is police to contact her and tell her its my stuff and work something out.
So pretty much I am screwed. The only person who knows her number is the roommate. My ex is being all paranoid and has her emotional wall up, trying to erase me from her life which is odd if she was doing that, why take my furniture and other stuff of mine?
Get new stuff, the cost of finding her, filing a claim in her new state, than actually getting paid will supersede the cost of your original belongings.

As you said, you are from out of state. Nobody will come after you either.

Contact civil attorney, or even go to the police!

Well u don’t have much to go on, the other room mate said she took it, but you yourself didn’t see her take it, so if the other person is willing to go to court with you, you can take it to court, but again you don’t have anything to work with, no Address nor phone number.. you may just want to write this one off as a lost dude..

Although you owned that stuff, you left her in legal possession of it. So when she took it, it was technically not the crime of larceny. She does not, however, have a right to keep your stuff. You can sue her, in small claims or court, for civil damages under the theory of "conversion." You can also try to get the furniture itself back instead of damages, but it’s usually easier just to get the cash equivalent and buy new stuff.
But, before you can sue her, you have to find her. And if she’s stealing your furniture, maybe she doesn’t have much money to give you even if you win. It’s a bad situation, but there may not be a cost-effective way to get your stuff back.
