Petrol vs Diesel on low millage?
Hello, I consider to buy a car. I found very nice Ford Focus
- petrol
- 1.4 Zetec
- 57.000 miles
-5 previous owners
-full service history (last service just written by hand without the stamp ~is this usual?
- 3 months warranty
- 6months tax
-9 months MOT
3.000 pounds (when I’ll give them my vauxhall corsa 1.0 1998, not the best condition it will cost 2.300 pounds).
Many people advise to buy diesel car. I do about 3000 miles, just from home to work and back (about 4 miles).
So I started to have a look at diesels and I found one, which is:
2003 03 Reg FORD Focus 1.8 TDCi Zetec
5 Doors, Manual, Hatchback, Diesel, 34,133 miles, Metallic Light Blue Metallic, 2 Owners. Full FORD Service History, Heated Front Screen, ABS, Front and Rear Parking Sensors, Alloy wheels, Folding rear seats, Immobiliser, Passenger airbag, Radio/CD, Rear headrests, Sports seats, Audio remote control, Body coloured bumpers, Drivers airbag, Front electric windows, Front head restraints, Height adjustable drivers seat, PAS, Rear wiper, Remote central locking, Space saver spare wheel, Steering wheel rake adjustment, Steering wheel reach adjustment, Front fog lights. Insurance Group:6, VERY LOW MILEAGE DIESEL SUPERB CONDITION THROUGHOUT
3.800 pounds (not sure if they would do part exchange)
What I like on second is low milage, original FORD service history, just two owners…
But first one is in great (green ) colour.
What do you think? Is it that important to buy a diesel?
Many thanks guys.
yes, the one, which I like has 5 prev. owners. That’s more, than average for this age of the car. What can this mean?
To go for a diesel you would be better off with a Vauxhall rather than a Ford, however if you don’t intend doing many miles go for a petrol as the petrol versions are always cheaper than the diesels. Don’t rush in to anything, in the current economic climate as a buyer you are in a strong position to get a bargain.

doing 3000 miles a year diesal wont make that much savings
1.4 petrol and 1.8 diesal so you have a bigger engine to start of with
and the miles you are doing are not that much to justify a diesal car
unless you do more then 10k a year then diesals will save ?
what you can do is compare MPG figures on diesal and petrol on the cars you have chosen
get the petrol car on this basis and also diesals are lot more costly to repair according to some mechanics

We bought a Peugeot 206 SW diesel and had it for …..6 months. Frankly I was very disappointed with it. Might just have been that car but. We traded it in for a really good deal with the local Peugeot dealership, for a 207 SW – PETROL. The difference is outstanding. It’s quiet, very peppy and altogether a completely different car. I have to pay the full Road Tax, but to be honest, to be in a quiet car I’d pay that more or less willingly. We only do a very low mileage these days so that’s not an issue in terms of consumption.
I’d be concerned about the 5 owners!! And I’d go for the lower mileage car every time. But I think I’d try to find a low-mileage petrol engined car. And there’s not much difference in the cost of petrol vs diesel these days either.

Just on the fuel point only – go for the petrol as it will be a whole lot nicer car o live with and the usage is too low to worry about fuel ecomomy.
A hand written stamp means the same as no entry at all – anyone could have written it.
The petrol you menion above has had too many owners – got to be something amiss with it and I reckon it is a damaged repaired – stay away.

On that sort of mileage I would not buy a diesel, it may actually cost you more to run than a petrol would due to servicing etc.
Fords don’t have the best diesel engines in the world either.
5 owners is quite a lot for a car, the 1.4 is also a bit too small for a Focus, I would recommend the 1.6. The Focus is a very popular car so I would shop around.

Go for the diesel one. 5 owners is very odd for a car of that age and a service without a stamp is just not good enough. You’ve worked hard for your money – don’t let someone try to take it away from you without giving answers to your concerns. A comparison between a petrol and a diesel is not that important for the amount of miles you intend to do. On longer journeys you would see the difference but what I would say is if you buy the diesel make sure that you give it a good "run" every once in a while. Good Luck!
